YOLO is the first step on a shelf photo: it spots where each product sits and draws a box around it, fast enough to keep up with thousands of photos. Those boxes, the crops, are what the rest of the pipeline recognizes.
For engineers: a single-stage real-time object detector; here it produces the crop proposals fed to the embedder.
