Community Insights

Sentry is the error and performance monitoring SaaS most developers reach for by default, “a joy to use.” The startup-relevant worry is quota. A single runaway bug can burn your event allowance fast, and self-hosting to dodge cost is a heavy lift (Kafka, ClickHouse, Zookeeper). On the managed plan, Spike Protection, Inbound Filters and support forgiveness blunt most surprise-bill risk. That makes the credits route the sane default for early teams.

Best Practices (from community tips)

  • Turn on Spike Protection and Inbound Filters from day one. They cap the damage when one bug floods events and protect your quota.
  • Understand the quota model. Plans bundle a fixed event/error quota with unlimited seats; overage is pay-as-you-go, or ~20% cheaper if you reserve volume you can forecast.
  • Don’t self-host to save money unless you’re at high volume. The stack (Kafka, ClickHouse, Zookeeper) is a genuine maintenance burden; the SaaS plan plus credits is usually the better trade for a startup.
  • Use the free plan first, then apply. Prior free-plan use doesn’t disqualify you. Apply for the startup credits once you’re ready to pay.
  • Apply via the form after creating an account; if you’re in YC or a16z Speedrun, check your deals portal first (separate, non-stacking offer).
