Community Insights

Linear is a fast, opinionated issue tracker for software teams. People routinely call it “much, much better” than Jira or Asana for speed, design and keyboard-driven flow, and it is strong enough to be a team’s system of record. The trade-offs come from that same opinionation: no self-hosted option (a non-starter for some regulated teams), thin roadmap/grouping views for Product, and the lack of custom fields / multi-assignee that forces cross-functional teams into sub-issue workarounds. Good fit for product-engineering teams under a couple hundred people.

Best Practices (from community tips)

  • Model secondary owners as sub-issues (e.g. QA: verify, Design sign-off) and standardize their naming. Linear has one assignee and no custom user fields.
  • Use labels to stand in for custom fields/states and automations to auto-create QA/review sub-issues.
  • Keep boards clean by collapsing sub-issues and filtering. The opinionated simplicity shifts some process modeling onto you.
  • Re-evaluate as you scale. If you constantly need multi-assignee, custom fields, or roadmap roll-ups, weigh whether Linear still fits (Jira/Shortcut for heavier process).
