Community Insights
Airbyte is widely seen as the best open-source ELT starting point: strong standard-connector ecosystem, a good connector builder for custom sources, and good fit with dbt/Airflow/Dagster (and Terraform for versioned pipelines). Experiences diverge at scale. Some teams run it happily, others find it slow (sequential reads), buggy and hard to troubleshoot past a few dozen jobs, and migrate to managed tools. Note this program is YC-only; non-YC startups are funneled to sales.
Best Practices (from community tips)
- Run a PoC first on your most important connectors and real data volume before committing.
- Stick to standard connectors (they’re the most stable) and use the Connector Builder for custom sources; expect destination-building to be harder.
- Version everything via Terraform/GitHub and add observability through your orchestrator (Airflow/Dagster) for clearer failure signals.
- Treat it as batch ELT, not real-time, and re-evaluate as you grow past ~20-30 connections. What works at PoC may not hold at scale.
